How Metal Foil Printing Works
The process starts with a design printed in adhesive, then a heated die presses metallic foil onto that adhesive, bonding it to the fabric wherever the adhesive sits. Peel away the excess foil, and what’s left is a clean, metallic imprint. We offer this in a few different approaches depending on the look you’re after.
Foil stamping: Foil applied to a flat area of the garment, giving a bold, solid metallic finish, most common for logos, brand names, or small graphic accents.
Foil embossing: Combines foil with a raised, pressed-in texture, so the design isn’t just metallic, it’s also slightly three-dimensional to the touch. This adds a more premium, tactile feel compared to flat foil alone.
Hot foil printing: The broader technique behind both of the above, heat and pressure transferring foil onto fabric, adaptable to fine detail work as well as bolder graphic placements.
Foil Colors and Finishes
Metal foil printing comes in a range of finishes, including gold, silver, copper, and holographic options, so the effect can be dialed toward subtle and premium or bold and eye-catching depending on the brand. Since foil reads best against contrast, it tends to show up strongest on darker fabric, black, navy, or deep tones where the metallic finish stands out clearly against the base color.
